A single 10cm-square framed piece can end up in one of two places: nailed to a wall, or inked into an arm. That's the choice TAPPEI is posing at his Osaka solo exhibition "WALL or SKIN"—and once the answer is given, the artwork itself changes form.
TAPPEI—artist, tattooist, and graphic designer—will hold his solo exhibition "WALL or SKIN" at i GALLERY OSAKA from August 15 to September 14. The show features 200 framed works, each 10cm square, and buyers must choose one of two options at purchase: "hang it on the wall" or "tattoo it on skin." Those who choose the former will receive the framed piece along with a certificate of authenticity once the exhibition ends. Those who choose the latter can get tattooed directly at the gallery during TAPPEI's on-site sessions.
What really catches the eye is what happens after the tattoo session. Buyers still receive the framed piece—but it now bears a "VOID" stamp, marking that the work has officially transferred from wall to skin, rendering the original framed paper null. In effect, the buyer ends up holding two versions at once: a voided original, and the inked, non-returnable version now living on their body.
According to the gallery, the point of the exhibition isn't to package tattoos as fine art for display. Rather, it's to use TAPPEI's practice to raise more fundamental questions about art: What counts as a work? What counts as an exhibition? What does it mean to own a piece? The entire project took shape over roughly a year of dialogue between TAPPEI and the gallery.
TAPPEI began his tattoo career in Osaka and is now based in Tokyo, working both in Japan and abroad. Choosing Osaka for this exhibition marks a return to where it all started for him—a chance to reflect on where his practice stands today. In his statement for the show, he writes: "I wanted to introduce 'tattooed onto skin' as a way of owning a piece purchased from a gallery. Whether it's hung on a wall or carried on the skin as a tattoo, both are simply different ways of owning the same work."
Tattoo sessions will only be held on August 16, 17, and 27–31, plus September 12 and 13, by reservation only. Only buyers of the artwork are eligible, and slots will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. Buyers unable to get tattooed in Osaka can also arrange a session at TAPPEI's Tokyo studio.
"WALL or SKIN" runs from August 15 to September 14, 2026, at i GALLERY OSAKA, located on the 1st floor of ACN Shinsaibashi Garden, 3-8-14 Minami-Semba, Chuo-ku, Osaka. Gallery hours are 12pm to 7pm, closed Tuesdays. The opening reception will be held on August 15 from 5pm to 8pm.
