The Cloudrunner line has never been On's fastest shoe—its job has always been to hold up through daily mileage. With the third generation now adding "Max" to the name, that mission gets spelled out even more clearly: the midsole is now built in two layers. The bottom layer uses durability-focused Helion foam, while a layer of Helion HF—the same high-rebound foam found in On's racing shoes—sits on top. Impact absorption during the run is handled by the bottom layer, which takes the wear and tear, while the top layer delivers the bounce-back feel. Rather than asking a single foam to do everything, each material sticks to what it does best.
The shoe's construction details all circle back to that same word: stability. The collar is rounded into a smooth curve, the tongue hugs snugly over the instep, a Heel Clip locks the heel in place at the back, and the sidewalls are built up higher—all aimed at reining in side-to-side ankle sway during a run. The outsole has also been widened for a larger ground-contact area, paired with a Rocker curve design to smooth out the transition from landing to toe-off.
This shoe also marks the first move in On's broader reshuffling of its running lineup. The brand is introducing a new identity platform called "Run On Clouds," sorting its running shoes into four categories—Soft, Support, Energy, and Speed—based on how a runner wants to feel in the moment. The Cloudrunner 3 Max clearly lands in the Support category. Co-founder Caspar Coppetti said the brand wants to "redefine the premium running experience by putting the feeling of running at the center of everything."
The Cloudrunner 3 Max drops August 6 for ¥24,200. Men's sizing runs 25.0–31.5 cm and women's 22.0–28.0 cm, with five colorways available for each. It will be sold at select On flagship stores, the brand's official online store, and retailers nationwide.
