This particular version existed for such a short time that most people don't even realize it was ever mass-produced. It's exactly this in-between model that Levi's Vintage Clothing has chosen to remake.
The most obvious identifier is the buckle back cinch at the rear waist — a labor-intensive pre-war design that was later phased out due to wartime material restrictions. The denim itself is a heavyweight "Shrink-to-Fit" selvedge fabric, unwashed and shipped in its raw state. Details like the chamfered yoke seam allowance, hidden rivets, single-needle arcuate pocket stitching, and the classic two-horse leather patch are all faithfully reproduced from archival references. The single-sided red capital "E" tab on the back pocket is another key marker for dating the piece.
Each pair comes with a reproduction of the original paper hangtag, along with an insert designed to look like a decorative US dollar bill from that era — an accessory that's essentially historical archaeology in itself, not a whimsical addition dreamed up by the design team.
The 1942 501 will be released in limited quantities on August 13 at Levi's Store Kyoto, with an online lottery available simultaneously through the official web store, priced at ¥66,000.
