Scan the QR code on the inside of a jacket, and what comes up isn't a discount code or a membership page—it's where the cotton came from, which suppliers were involved, the carbon footprint, and how to recycle it at the end. This isn't a concept demo; it's a real system the EU is about to roll out—the Digital Product Passport (DPP).

The legal basis for the DPP is the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which took effect in July 2024. In short, it requires products to come with a queryable electronic ID that covers materials, origin, supply chain, carbon footprint, and recycling methods—consumers or auditors can just scan the code to see it all.

When people hear "electronic ID" and "scan to verify," the first reaction is often "this must run on blockchain"—after all, "tamper-proof" and "traceable" fit the crypto narrative perfectly. But the truth is, the DPP regulation itself is technology-neutral. Blockchain is just one optional implementation, not a mandatory requirement. What the EU actually cares about is that the data can be queried, verified, and standardized in format—which database or ledger stores it is left entirely up to individual companies. For anyone trying to spin the story that "DPP equals blockchain must-have," that's a misconception that needs correcting.

The timeline is already set: the battery passport comes first, scheduled to launch in February 2027; the ESPR as a whole will be fully applicable from July 2026; and by 2030, nearly all product categories will fall under DPP requirements. In other words, this isn't some distant policy draft—it's a countdown with a clear deadline.

For Taiwanese exporters, what really needs preparing isn't picking a blockchain solution—it's whether the supply chain's own data can be traced and recorded in a structured way. Material sources, processing locations, carbon emission figures—if these aren't being systematically kept now, filling in the gaps to meet DPP requirements later will be far more trouble than expected.
