Not a single note on this record was played live, yet it's credited with reshaping the entire trajectory of electronic music — that's the legacy of DJ Shadow's Endtroducing. Released in September 1996, the debut album is considered the first record ever made entirely from samples, pieced together across two spaces: his own home studio, The Glue Factory, in San Francisco, and Dan The Automator's studio, where fragments of rock, psychedelia and jazz were stitched into a single rhythmic fabric.
Now Joshua Paul Davis, aka DJ Shadow, is marking the occasion with a 30th anniversary reissue. The album returns on September 18 with its original tracklist intact, including "Midnight In A Perfect World," "Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt," "Organ Donor," and the self-aware "Why Hip-Hop Sucks In '96" — 12 tracks in total, now available for pre-order via the official page.
Over the past three decades, the record's lo-fi textures and atmospheric soundscapes have come to be seen as a foundational moment for modern electronic music. Radiohead has cited its influence, and Deftones enlisted DJ Shadow in 2020 to remix "Black Stallion" from White Pony — telling NME at the time that having him rework the whole album had long been something of a dream project for the band.
The anniversary tour kicks off September 24 at The Sound in San Diego, before running through Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Denver and Seattle, plus stops north of the border in Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver, wrapping up in early November in Fort Worth, Texas. Only one overseas date has been announced: December 18 at London's Barbican, the sole European stop on this run.
Earlier this year, DJ Shadow also released The Mo'Wax Singles 1993-1997, a collection of singles and unreleased remixes from his time on the Mo'Wax label; his most recent full studio album was 2024's Action Adventure.
