A.G. Cook's name is usually tied to overprocessed synth tones and Charli XCX-style hyperpop. So when he stepped in as producer for Diiv's new album "ZIRP!," the strangest part wasn't the fact that an electronic music guy was crossing over into rock — it was his very first call: get the drums down live, and do it before most of the songs were even finished.
"I was kind of obsessed with their live sound," Cook said in the press release. "We spent a lot of time on guitar tones, using specific pedals, and tried to keep things off the computer as much as possible — at least by my standards." Coming from someone who built his career on computer music, that statement carries some weight on its own. After several rounds of recording, "ZIRP!" gradually took shape from an abstract idea into what he calls "a utopian-slash-dystopian mantra" — and a tool he used to push the band into new territory.
The album drops October 30 via Fantasy Recordings with 11 tracks. Lead single "The Fountain" is out now, alongside other tracks including "Kid," "When The Glow Came For Us," "Trillions," and "Idiot In The Sky." It's Diiv's follow-up to 2024's "Frog in Boiling Water."
The tour kicks off ahead of the album's release: September 27 at Balaclava Fest in São Paulo, Brazil, then heading to North America with a stop at The Meadows in Brooklyn on September 29, back-to-back dates at The Eastern in Atlanta on October 15 and 16, a show at Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles on October 20, and wrapping up the run at Psyched! Fest in San Francisco on October 21. November brings overseas dates too, including Pitchfork Music Festival stops in Paris on November 2 and London on November 7, plus Sonic City Festival in Kortrijk, Belgium on November 6.
